Restylane and Perlane: What Are They?
Restylane and
Perlane are highly effective facial fillers containing hyaluronic acid. Because this substance occurs in the human tissues naturally, Restylane and Perlane injections do not require extensive pretesting as the risk of allergic reaction is very small. In addition, due to their unique chemical composition, Restylane and Perlane offer longer lasting results than many other, collagen-based facial fillers. Most Restylane / Perlane patients enjoy noticeable rejuvenation results for up to six months following their treatments.
Restylane is a unique formulation of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance which occurs as an important structural element in the skin, and helps maintain moisture and volume. Each
Restylane product is a clear gel containing microparticles of a specific size. This allows your health care professional to select the right combination of gels to obtain the effect you desire
Perlane, like Restylane, is a dermal filler and is a long-lasting gel that, once injected into the skin with an ultra-fine needle, lift and add volume and help diminsh fine lines. Made of a natural substance called hyaluronic acid, it is a completely safe treatment. The hyaluronic acid in Perlane simply supplements the body's age-depleted hyaluronic acid to plump-up the lip or to raise the skin and 'fill in' the particular wrinkle being treated.
The difference between Restylane and Perlane is the size of the particle (with Perlane containing more hyaluronic acid). Perlane is manufactured by the same company that brings you Restylane.
Restylane / Perlane: Is It For Me?
Restylane and Perlane fillers can be used for several purposes. These substances can be injected in the forehead and around the mouth to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. In addition, these fillers can be used for shaping facial contours, such as adding volume to the cheeks and chin.
Restylane and Perlane can be used to Augment facial contours, reshape the cheeks, chin and lips (lip augmentation), creating a more youthful looking appearance or achieving the overall facial shape you've always wanted. It's suitable for sunken cheeks, weak chins and thin lips.
Can also be used for filling in wrinkles and folds: medium to severe folds on the face may be corrected, particularly nasolabial folds, those lines that extend from the outer corners of your mouth to the nose.
Perlane is made up of larger gel particles containing a higher amount of hyaluronic acid, and is designed to be injected into the deeper layer of the dermis (or the surface of the subcutis). It is indicated for deeper folds while its counterpart, Restylane®, has a lower amount of hyaluronic acid and is more suited to treat finer wrinkles and lines.
Filling in deep acne scars: deepset scars resulting from severe acne breakouts can be filled in with Perlane.
The Procedure
Lasting up to half an hour, treatment with Perlane/Restylane involves an injection into the skin of the targeted area using an extremely fine needle. No allergy test is required. To ease discomfort, a topical anaesthetic may be applied beforehand. Immediately following the injection, improvement may be visible, however optimal results appear after the possible swelling and redness associated with injections subside (in about a week or less).
Like most other injectable fillers, results are temporary and last depending on the area, problem treated, and the injection technique. Generally speaking, results last anywhere from 6-9 months. Maintenance treatments may be scheduled to prolong results.
What Can You Expect?
After any injection, you may experience swelling, redness, pain, itching, discolouration, and tenderness. Other side effects include itching and tenderness Mineral based makeup can be used to camouflage the area as it heals. There is no downtime, and regular activities may be resumed after treatment. Any side effect will typically last less than a week.
